Shellfish from Surigao del Sur bays safe for human consumption

BUTUAN CITY, April 11 (PIA) – Shellfish in Surigao del Sur are safe for human consumption, according to the latest lab result, dated April 4 of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).
Based on the results of BFAR and local government units, shellfish collected in Hinatuan, Bislig, and Lianga bays, all in the province of Surigao del Sur are safe, free from toxin red tides. All types of shellfish and Acetes sp. or alamang gathered from the areas above areas are safe for human consumption.
Other areas continue to be free from toxin red tides including: coastal waters of Cavite, Las Pinas, Paranaque, Navotas, Bulacan and Bataan in Manila Bay; coastal waters of Alaminos and Wawa, Bani in Pangasinan; coastal waters of Milagros and Mandaon in Masbate; Juag Lagoon in Matnog and Sorsogon Bay in Sorsogon. Honda and Puerto bays in Puerto Princesa City, and Inner Malampaya Sound in Taytay, Palawan; coastal waters of Pilar, President Roxas, Pontevedra, Panay, Roxas City, Ivisan and Sapian in Capiz; coastal waters of E. B. Magalona, Pontevedra, Pulupandan, Valladolid, Talisay City, Silay City, Bacolod City, Hinigaran, Cadiz City, Victorias City, Bago City and San Enrique in Negros Occidental; Irong-irong, Maqueda and Villareal Bays in Samar; Matarinao Bay in Eastern Samar; Ormoc, San Pedro and Cancabato and Carigara Bays in Leyte; Biliran waters in Biliran Province; Balite Bay in Mati, Davao Oriental; coastal waters of Kabasalan in Sibuguey Bay, Zamboanga Sibugay; and Tangines Lagoon in Benoi Mahinog, Camiguin Island.
Also, BFAR also warned the public of the following areas where all types of shellfish and alamang are not safe for human consumption and are positive of red tide toxin to include: Dumanquillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur; Murcielagos Bay in Zamboanga del Norte and Misamis Occidental; and coastal waters of Bolina and Anda in Pangasinan. Launching of the International Year of the forests set

BUTUAN CITY, April 11 (PIA) – Year 2011 is National Year of the Forests.
The launching of the International Year of the Forests Declaration and the National Greening Program (NGP) of the Aquino administration in Caraga region is scheduled on April 15, 2011.
According to National Economic and Development Authority and Mt. Mayapay Rehabilitation Task Force chairperson Carmencita S. Cochingco, the launching activity for Butuan City and Agusan del Norte will be held at the Mt. Mayapay Rehabilitation Project at the military reservation in barangay Nongnong, this city.
President Benigno Simeon Aquino III on March 15 issued Presidential Proclamation No. 125, declaring year 2011 as the National Year of the Forests. Said proclamation is in accordance with the UN General Assembly’s declaration of the year 2011 as the International Year of the Forests, which aims at raising the level of awareness of the people worldwide on sustainable forest management, conservation and development.
The NGP, seeks to plant 1.5 billion trees in 1.5 million hectares nationwide in six years, from 2011 to 2016. (NCLM-PIA-Caraga)
Provincial Agriculture Office bares annual investment plan for 2011

AGUSAN DEL NORTE, April 11 (PIA) - The Agusan del Sur Provincial Agriculture Office (PAO) has laid down its annual investment plan for economic grown sector in its aim to improve food production addressing the threat of food shortages as results of unpredictable weather.
Armando Lagumbay, PAO chief said, his office has budgeted some P50 million for this year for various agricultural programs such as diversified farming system, agricultural enhancement for growth and productivity, fruits, vegetable and fiber production, inland fish production, and veterinary production. Other programs that are subject to develop are the upscaling of micro-enterprise, livelihood employment and assistance program and the establishment of the Agusan Marsh Ecolodge to support the tourism industry of the province.
“For diversified farming and agricultural enhancement for growth and productivity alone, PAO has set a budget amounting to P24 million. This program is bound to increase our rice and corn production, which has suffered great setback due to recent floods that we experienced.
For fruits, vegetables and fiber production, we budgeted P5,275,000; for inland fish production, P600,000 including our support to organic farming amounting to P350,000. We also budgeted P1,150,000 for our provincial soil laboratory, while setting aside budget as counterpart for special projects amounting to P643,819. Our veterinary office has also budgeted some P9,630,189 for nine programs, while the Agusan desl Sur Economic Research and Business Center (ASERBAC) has budgeted some P8 million for livelihood employment and assistance program and the rehabilitation of water supply level III. We also set a budget amounting to P700,000 for cassava chips and meat processing,” Lagumbay said.
According to Lagumbay, the amount for the establishment of the Agusan Marsh ecolodge will be taken from the provincial tourism office, amounting to P3 million. Lagumbay said, they are only tasked to support the tourism industry considering that mostly of the rice lands are within or near the Agusan marsh.
Lagumbay added that the budget presented is purely from the provincial government. There are projects that are national and foreign funded and are not included in the 2011 annual investment plan as approved by the governor. (DMS -PIA-Agusan del Sur)
DSWD Social Pension set to launch in Tandag

TANDAG CITY, April 11 (PIA) - The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is set to launch the Social Pension tomorrow, April 12 at Season's Park Apartelle, this city.
In an interview with City Social Welfare Development Officer Tessie Buniel, revealed that there are 168 pensioners here who will receive cash amounting to P500.00 every month from January to March starting tomorrow.
The selection of the pensioners was based from the National Housing Targeting System.
CSWD Buniel further said, that the program was mandated under Republic Act 9994 otherwise known as the "Expabded Senior Citizens Act of 2010" granting additional benefits and privileges to Senior Citizens to augment the daily subsistence and other medical needs for the improvement of the living condition of every pensioners.
Also, DSWD-Caraga Regional Director Mercedita Jabagat is expected to grace the said event, to be attended by the local officials here and social pension beneficiaries of this City. (PIA-Surigao del Sur)
Labor Day activities in Caraga Region set
TANDAG CITY, April 11 (PIA) - Simultaneous with the announcement that summer job is going to start today, April 11, 2011, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) also said that the activities on Labor Day in Caraga Region is set.
DOLE Regional Director Ofelia Domingo said, the two-day event which regularly features a Job Fair will be held at their office compound in Butuan City from April 30-May 1.
Domingo said, to make the occasion more significant, her office has invited companies from Metro Manila.
Likewise, DOLE will hold the first ever "Learning Session" for applicants. Learning Session refers to the applicant's preparations, confidence building, and power dressing, Domingo explained.

Quake shakes Surigao City
SURIGAO DEL NORTE, Apr. 11 (PIA) - A magnitude 4.8 earthquake jolted Surigao City early dawn today, Apr. 11 but did not cause damage or injuries and aftershocks, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
In its bulletin, the quake struck at 4:14AM with the epicenter at 67 kilometers east of Surigao City.
The quake was felt at intensity III in Mainit, Surigao del Norte, intensity II in Surigao City and Libagon, Southern Leyte.

Daycare workers told don’t teach pupils ‘macho dancing’
SURIGAO CITY, Apr. 11 (PIA) – Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Sec. Dinky Soliman appealed to all daycare workers not to teach their pupils 'macho dancing' after an incident on live TV where a 6-year-old boy did the routine in exchange for cash.
Speaking before a hundred daycare workers in the city on Thursday, April 7, 2011, she said that teaching children to mimic adult sexy dances are degrading or demeaning to their dignity as human beings.
“I appeal to all daycare workers not to teach our children macho or sexy dance because it’s not right. You might ask why, it’s as if we are teaching them how to sell their bodies for money.”
Soliman, however, clarified that she is not prohibiting the children to dance, “hindi masamang sumayaw, pero iangkop natin ang sayaw ng mga bata para sa mga bata at hindi po natin tuturuan ng sayaw na dapat sinasayaw ng matanda.”
