DILG provincial personnel join DENR NGP undertaking on Arbor Day

BUTUAN CITY, June 26
-- Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Provincial Personnel of Surigao del Sur, together with some employees of the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) and some Barangay Officials, conducted tree planting activity along the National Highway of barangays Dayoan and Cagdapaw, Tago, Surigao del Sur yesterday, June 25, 2011, Arbor Day.

Armed with bolos and mattock, they drove to the site and planted 100 seedlings of Narra and Mahogany provided by the CENRO. 

The activity is in line with the National Greening Program as articulated in Executive Order No. 26 which pursues biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation and adaptation among others. It is also in pursuance to DILG Memorandum Circular No. 2011-21 which enjoins all barangay officials nationwide to participate in the Billion Trees Program by planting at least 25,000 trees on Arbor Day.

“This is very significant in view of our continuing effort to reduce and manage the risk brought about by natural disaster. Indeed, prevention is better than cure,” said Pedrito P. Alacaba, DILG Provincial Director of Surigao del Sur.

Director Alacaba further commented that continuous advocacy for the implementation of the program and close coordination with the Local Chief Executives and other concerned agencies are conducted in all local government units in the province.
