DOH allots P1.7-M Philhealth premium counterparts for Surigao City, Surigao Norte
SURIGAO DEL NORTE, June 28 (PIA) -- The Department of Health – Caraga Region (DOH-13) has allotted P1.7 million for the Philhealth premium counterparts for the entire province of Surigao del Norte, DOH Caraga Director Leonita Gorgolon said, during the launching of Philhealth Sabado 2 on June 25 in Surigao City.
Gorgolon said around P1.3 million was allotted for the municipalities in Surigao del Norte, while P430,000 was allotted for Surigao City for the Philhealth enrollment of 1,342 poorest of the poor families identified under the National Households Targeting System (NHTS).
Director Gorgolon revealed that there were 15 sites conducting the National Philhealth Registration Day-2 (NPDRP-2) simultaneously in the entire Caraga Region.
Last Saturday, some indigent residents from Surigao City showed up for the NPDRP-2 dubbed as “Philhealth Sabado-2” at the Mariano Espina Memorial Central Elementary School (MEMCES) and Surigao West Central Elementary School (SWES).
It was learned that Philhealth Surigao City distributed a total of 3,216 Philhealth cards to the recipients in the 11 mainland barangays of the city.
City Mayor Ernesto Matugas, in a speech read by City Administrator Atty. Manuel Corro, thanked and congratulated Philhealth and all other government agencies for their support and contribution in achieving the goal of the national government for quality healthcare. He also thanked the Surigaonons for the support as well.
This activity is a partnership between the Department of Health (DOH) Philhealth, Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), and Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC), League of Governors, League of Municipalities, League of Cities, and League of Barangays. Army recovers thousands of NPA ammos, high-powered firearms, landmines in Surigao del Sur

SURIGAO DEL SUR, June 28 (PIA) -- Some 4,000 rounds of assorted ammunitions, four landmines, and one mini-squad automatic weapon (SAW) with serial No. FN071755 were recovered here over the weekend by the composite team of the Philippine Army’s 401st Brigade under Col Romeo Gan, the newly installed brigade commander.
PSI Ray Sorida, Chief of Police (COP) of San Agustin town said the composite team engaged in a firefight with 25 members of the CPP-NPA-NDF communist insurgents that lasted for about an hour, which started at 2 pm on June 25, in Barangay Buhisan of said municipality.
As a result, private first class (PFC) Caramonte of 36th Infantry Battalion was hurt while an undetermined number of rebels were believed to have been injured.
Two days earlier, on June 23, at about 11 am, squad leader Corporal Salli Sawali of the Army’s 29IB was hit in the right knee by bullet allegedly coming from an undetermined number of armed men believed to be NPA rebels as they were on security patrol in Brgy Mahaba, Marihatag, 50 km south from Tandag.

DPWH-Siargao implements ‘No Smoking’ policy

SIARGAO ISLANDS, Surigao del Norte, June 28 -- In its drive to adopt and promulgate a 100 percent smoke-free policy, the Department of Public Works and Highways Surigao del Norte 2nd District Engineering Office (DPWH-SDN 2nd DEO) has prohibited smoking inside the office premises.
Speaking during Monday’s flag raising ceremony here, Administrative Officer Juana Betty Porpayas said the district office has designated an area for smoking with specific schedules prohibiting smoking inside various sections’ office premises.
The implementation of the smoke free policy in the district office is in line with the provisions of the Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003 (R.A. 9211) and Civil Service Commission (CSC) Memorandum No. 17 s. 2009.
“This policy ensures a healthy working environment and in a way will help smokers to quit from this vice,” said Assistant District Engineer Rodulfo A. Libay in his Monday morning thoughts for all DPWH employees.
To ensure proper implementation of the policy, District Engineer Salvador E. Montil , Jr. has directed all heads of sections to strictly observe the policy in their respective offices or be held responsible for the consequences. (DPWH Surigao del Norte, 2nd Eng’g. District/PIA-Caraga)

MSWDO confirms 269 evacuated from San Agustin for fear of crossfire

SURIGAO DEL SUR, June 28 (PIA) -– A total of 53 families, consisting of 269 individuals, have reportedly evacuated from Barangay Hanipaan, San Agustin, Surigao del Sur yesterday afternoon, said San Agustin Municipal Social Welfare and development officer (MSWDO) Leonila Gonzaga.
In an interview, Gonzaga told PIA that the said evacuees are now temporarily housed at the municipal gym.
Meanwhile, 212 families or 1,002 individuals also reportedly evacuated from Barangay Mahaba, Marihatag on June 20 and as of press time, they are temporarily housed at Marihatag Gym. Others are reportedly seeking refuge from their relatives in the nearby barangays also because of the series of military and communist insurgents in the area, the MSWDO reported.
It can be recalled that on June 25, a military encounter ensued between the Philippine Army and the CPP/NPA/NDF which lasted for about an hour at Sitio Magkahunaw, Buhisan of the same municipality that resulted in the recovery of one mini-squad automatic weapon, four landmines and 4,000 rounds of assorted ammunition.
Report also said the incident took place after the communist rebels recently harassed the community while the troops of 29IB were conducting Medical Civic Action Program (MedCAP) in the area.
The series of encounter urged the people to leave their community for fear that they would be caught in the crossfire between the government troops and the rebel group. (PIA-Surigao del Sur)
