by Noel B. Najarro
BUTUAN CITY, July 16 -- About sixteen health professionals and ten media practitioners in the province recently participated in a training- workshop called Telling Health Stories That Inspire, at a local suite and restaurant here in the city.
Dr. Elizabeth N. Campado, Agusan del Norte Provincial Health Officer said that the two-day activity was in line with the recently launched program by the Department of Health (DOH), the Lakbay Buhay Kalusugan (LBK) health promotion campaign to deliver key family health messages to disadvantage communities. Part of the LBK campaign, according to Dr. Campado, is the conduct of media trainings for local health professionals and media practitioners, under the Health Promotion and Communication Project (HealthPRO).
The training includes a workshop for local health professionals that aim to equip them with skills on identifying health stories, message development and effectively facing the media on various health issues particularly on family planning, safe motherhood, and child health and nutrition.
The trainings were held on July 12 and 13, 2011 from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. at the Red Palm Suite and Restaurant along Villa Kananga Road (at the back of the Capitol Compound) with the health professionals coming on Day 1.
The second Day was scheduled for the media practitioners of the province, wherein the trainings provided a perspective on reporting health issues as well as the avenue to engage with local health service providers on health stories. During the session the media participants were also given an opportunity to submit health story proposals that could be screened for the Lakbay Buhay Kalusugan Media Fellowship Grant.
Among the media trainers is the veteran journalist, singer-composer and artist Mr. Joey Ayala who introduced some recent techniques on newsgathering and story writing among them was what he called his own “salindiwa” technique.
The participating media outfits includes the Medianet Balita, Butuan Star, Radyo Ng Bayan, DXBR Bombo Radyo, ABC 5 (Local TV), Agusan del Norte Monitor and the Provincial PIO. (PIA Caraga)
