By Jennifer P. Gaitano
BUTUAN CITY, April 5 (PIA) -- To ensure peaceful observance of this year’s Holy Week, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG)-Caraga has directed all local officials in the region to monitor various activities during the season and ensure safety of the public.
DILG regional director Lilibeth Famacion issued the directive based on Memorandum Circular No. 2012-59 dated March 28, 2012.
Famacion reiterated that this year’s Holy Week also coincides with the start of the summer vacation of schools all over the country.
“During this period, people also take the opportunity to spend their summer holiday break and travel to the provinces for spiritual recollection and/or leisure activities. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has also raised the possibility of at least one tropical depression/storm entering the Philippine area of responsibility during this season,” said Famacion.
With this, all local chief executives (LCEs) are hereby directed to convene their respective Local Peace and Order Councils (LPOCs), and Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (LDRRMCs), and formulate the proper courses of action to anticipate the expected heavy movement of people from different places, always making sure that adequate transportation and emergency medical services are available.
LCEs shall also deploy barangay tanods to assist the Philippine National Police in keeping peace and order in their own barangays, and serve as force multipliers; mobilize all necessary resources to ensure that garbage are collected and properly disposed of, and to conduct clean-up operations in all public places within their jurisdiction, especially in churches, recreation facilities, public beaches, transport terminals, markets and other places of public gatherings.
Lastly, local officials shall ensure that traffic is well managed and that the safety and security of the people are always top priority.
Meanwhile, all DILG regional and field offices are also directed to monitor various activities during this observance and submit periodic reports to the secretary of the DILG. (JPG/PIA-Caraga)
