Local gov’t aims to transform Butuan a “green
city”
By Robert E. Roperos
BUTUAN CITY, Feb. 12 (PIA) -- The local
government here is aiming to transform Butuan into a green city where Butuanons
live peacefully in resilient communities by 2020.
This is what Mr. Pierre Anthony Joven of the
city’s Economic Development Cluster said during Monday’s launching of
“Kukabildo,” a regular press forum where different clusters organized by the
city government are featured as the cluster team members will give their report
to the city government and the local media on their accomplishments, as well as
their plans and programs.
In his presentation, Mr. Joven said in order to
develop human capital, infrastructure and competitiveness, as well as to
generate employment, increase household income, and ensures environmental
sustainability, there is a need for the city government to institutionalize
economic fundamentals by developing transportation, infrastructures, policies,
and ease of doing business.
Joven also said the economic development cluster
optimizes resource utilization through agro forestry development and develop
forests, rivers, and the metropolis to promote and stimulate inland economy.
To achieve environmental sustainability, Joven
said adoption of green technology and best practices must also be implemented.
He explained that massive growing of trees, industrial crops, and organic
gulayan sa barangay (vegetable for barangay) also ensure food security,
diversify and increase farmers’ income, and optimize land utilization thru agro
forestry.
Joven further said the rehabilitation of Agusan
River enhances climate change adaptation and disaster risk resiliency. “It can
also lower transport cost of farm products, maintenance cost of road networks,
and stimulate inland economic activities,” he said.
The official also stressed the city government
will pursue the Public Private Partnership (PPP) and the Public-Private Academe
Partnership (PPAP) to attract foreign direct investment.
Sub-titled “Hugoy-hugoy ug Balita sa Pamahaw”
(Discussion and news in breakfast), the launching of “Kukabildo” featured the
Economic Development Cluster, as well as the signing of Memorandum of Agreement
between the city government and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)
to support the Ivory .07 Arts and Crafts Association, a non-government
organization that is producing handicrafts made by dried water hyacinth,
popularly known as water lily.
Patterned after the Aquino administration where
the Philippine Development Plan are clustered among government agencies
according to their roles in the community, the city government here has created
four clusters that will focus on the different development aspects of this
city. These clusters include: Development Administration, Social Services,
Infrastructure Development, and Economic Development. (RER/PIA-Caraga)
