DENR 13 to reforest more than 32,000 hectares
By Eric F. Gallego
BUTUAN CITY, June 18 (PIA) -- The Department of
Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Caraga Region is prepared to
reforest more than 32,000 hectares over the next five months as part of this
its endeavor to surpass the goal for the National Greening Program in the
region this year.
“Our goal is only 13,252 hectares but we have
our efforts,” DENR OIC regional executive director for Region 13 Nonito M.
Tamayo said.
“While the DENR Caraga may have earned credit
from the top management as one of the ‘top performing’ regional offices
nationwide, we should give our best shot on reforestation efforts this
time."
Tamayo echoed the challenge of DENR Secretary
Ramon JP Paje to the 13 CENR and % PENR officers of DENR 13 during a top
management conference held at the DENR Regional Training Center in Butuan City.
“This is the time for you to shine,” he said.
The meeting was called by Tamayo in a move to trouble-shoot
what could be a slow-pace implementation of the NGP and other programmed
activities in some key-result areas during the first semester this year.
Tamayo said that while the top management
officials at the Central Office appreciate the positive accomplishment of the
DENR Regional Office 13, “it should however, drive us to perform more than what
we have laid out for the physical target this year’ Tamayo told his field
officers.
“Let us be serious about this program, we can
afford to compromise the banner program of President Benigno S. Aquino
III," Tamayo said.
He said the productivity of the field offices in
the NGP during the first six months this year has been slow reaching only to an
average 35 percent of the target.
Tamayo said the funds for the NGP have already
been downloaded to the different field offices; hence, he said “we expect that
the reforestation activities are expected to accelerate at the maximum level
performance.
“Our time is limited to accomplish the goal in
six months," Tamayo said. "It would be the best for us to surpass the
target goal by 200 percent of the target."
He said the participation of other sectors in
the NGP is very encouraging and very important to the goal of the DENR 13 this
year which has a target goal of 12, 112 hectares. Aside from the DENR, the
mining sectors, the Community Based Forest Management Program, Integrated
Forest Management Agreement, various schools, and private sectors have joined
the DENR in the NGP.
PENRO Roberto Oliveros of Agusan del Sur said he
has mobilized all personnel assigned in the forestry section with instruction
to coordinate with the different private organization to maximize reforestation
efforts.
Director Tamayo, however, warned the PENROs and
CENROs to wisely utilize the NGP funds and avoid the misuse of it otherwise” we
will be criminally liable and face the consequences of our actions” he added.
