DOH launches new vaccine in Caraga region

By Nora L. Molde

BUTUAN CITY, July 17 (PIA) -- The Department of Health launched today the Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV) in Caraga region, the recipient of the drug in the country.

“Caraga is very fortunate to be one of the first recipients of the PCV," according to Dr. Ariel Valencia, Department of Health – Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) Caraga regional director. "We host not only an event here, but we also are making history.”

He said that through this, more infant lives will be saved as they are most vulnerable to the disease. "We give the hope of a better generation where infants are well and healthy."

The PCV will now be a part of the regular vaccines to be given to infants below one year of age.

The integration of this vaccine is a monumental milestone in the EPI.

Caraga region together with the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) are the first to receive the PCV in complement to the current Rotavirus Vaccine which was introduced in 2010. The PCV will address the need for better protection of infants against pneumococcal pneumonia.

The national launching today is graced by DOH Assistant Secretary Enrique A. Tayag representing Secretary Enrique T. Ona. (NCLM/PIA-Caraga)

Butuan councilor & chair on social services committee lauds PWDs

By Jennifer P. Gaitano

BUTUAN CITY, July 17 (PIA) – “Persons with Disabilities are truly an inspiration to all of us.”

This was the statement of city councilor and chair of the social services committee Ferdinand Nalcot during the opening program of this year’s National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week celebration held on Wednesday at the Butuan Central Elementary School (BCES).

Speaking before the teachers, parents, representatives of government agencies, Nalcot expressed his appreciation to the PWDs who are striving hard to live and making things worthy that would contribute development in the community.

“When I see PWDs working hard despite their disability, I feel inspired and I feel more motivated to do my part well as government worker… PWDs are model of hope and strength that we should never give up on things that will make us happy and things that will improve other people’s lives,” stressed Nalcot.

Also, Nalcot acknowledged the untiring efforts of the teachers in teaching and in molding the characters of the children especially those with disabilities.

“We commend the valuable support and efforts of our teachers especially in the public schools handling a number of pupils in a class but are still able to perform their jobs well and have been inculcating good characters to the children so they will grow responsible and God-fearing,” said Nalcot.

With this, Nalcot, as chair of the committee, encouraged the general public to promote the rights and welfare for the PWDs not only for this celebration but in every day living.

This year’s celebration is anchored on the theme "Building an Inclusive and Non-Handicapping Environment for Persons with Disabilities." (JPG/PIA-Caraga)
