By Johny S. Natad

BUTUAN CITY, August 19 (PIA) – The Caraga Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is set to formulate an environmental awareness roadmap for the region.

During the DENR Caraga Environmental Education Committee meeting on August 16, Eric Herson Gallego, DENR Caraga chief of Regional Public Affairs Office bared that there is a need for the region to draft a roadmap in order to increase the awareness of the schools and general public in terms of environmental concerns.

“The committee together with the relevant government stakeholders as stipulated in DENR Special Order No. 2011-716 have to discuss the proposed programs of the region in support to Republic Act 9512 or Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008 and tackle the region’s commitment actions to the National Environmental Action Plan for this year which primarily promote environmental awareness,” Gallego said.

The DENR Special Order 2011-716 reconstitute the DENR Environmental Education Committee to ensure a continuing integration and implementation of environmental awareness and education program in all levels of school curricula and capacity building program. It also stipulates the committee's function to promote environmental awareness in cooperation with the Department of Education, Commission on Higher Education, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of the Interior and Local Government and other concerned agencies.

Gallego said that the representatives from concerned government and academic institutions in the region are expected to contribute to the National Environmental Action Plan 2014-2018 by submitting their agency's input to the regional Proposed Action Commitment to the National Environmental Education Action Plan: A Roadmap for the Implementation of RA9512 for 2014-2018.
