three component programs : Adolescent Health and Youth Development Program
(AHYDP), POPDEV Integration Program, and Responsible Parenthood/Family Planning
Program.
“The program has the objective to help
couples/parents exercise responsible parenting to achieve the desired number,
timing and spacing of children and to contribute in improving maternal,
neonatal, child health and nutrition status; to help adolescents and youth
avoid risky sexual behaviour to reduce incidence of teenage pregnancies, early
marriages, sexually transmitted infections and other psycho-social concerns;
and to contribute to policies that will assist government to achieve a
favourable balance between population growth and distribution, economic
activities and the environment,” Makinano said.
According to family planning survey of 2011,
Caraga has the highest percentage of women ages 15-19 who have begun
childbearing at 15 percent compared to the national average at 9.5 percent.
Through PPMP’s general directions and
strategies, “It will generate outcomes of reduced incidence of maternal,
neonatal and child deaths, delayed sexual involvement among adolescents,
reduced proportion of adolescents in early marriages, and reduced incidence of
sexually trans mitted disease (STI) and Human Immune-deficiency
Virus(HIV)/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome(AIDS) infections among
adolescents and youth,” bared Makinano.
He further said that there are other regional
specific issues on population and family planning that need to be addressed.
The support of the local government units is imperative in realizing the PPMP’s
objectives.
