Team Mindanao’s free charging at RTR Plaza serves 70 residents

TACLOBAN CITY, Nov. 27 (PIA) – The Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Team Mindanao free cellphone charging service has served around 70 residents at the RTR Plaza, here.

According to team leader and PIA Caraga regional director Abner M. Caga, the free cellphone charging that was held at the RTR Plaza, the first venue of the agency’s free service, was successful and a significant endeavor of the team.

“The free cellphone charging is intended to help the typhoon Yolanda survivors/residents of the area in order for them to have a continuous contact to their families,” said Caga.

Angelica Mae Marie Burdeos, a resident of barangay Paterno and a survivor of typhoon Yolanda was very happy upon learning of the free service offered by PIA. She was also thankful that the team was able to conceptualize such unique service.

“I am indeed happy that I was able to charge my cellphone today, I can now contact and give updates to my loved ones and friends,” she said.

Burdeos was able to have her cellphone fully charged.

Aside from the free cellphone charging, technical assistance was also provided to the recipients.  They were taught how to utilize their cellphones as FM radio.

Also, laptops, emergency lamps and flashlights of the residents were also allowed by the team to be charged.

Restoration of electric lines is still ongoing in the area.

The free charging at the RTR Plaza started at 9a.m. up to 12:30 p.m. The next venue of the free charging will be at the Tacloban Astrodome.

While residents/survivors of typhoon Yolanda are availing of the free charging, PIA’s Power FM also entertains them with music.

Simultaneous with the conduct of PIA’s Team Mindanao free charging is the whole day Diskwento Caravan of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) region 8 headed by its officer-in-charge Stanley Tabiando. (NCLM/PIA-Caraga)


Smart telecom offers ‘libreng tawag’ to Yolanda victims

TACLOBAN CITY, Nov. 27 (PIA) – In its effort to help Yolanda victims, Smart Communications has benevolently shared their communication services for free.

This humanitarian program of Smart has allowed the beneficiaries to communicate with their loved ones and make other necessary calls free of charge.

The telecom company, together with Team Apl.de.ap, has also turned over on Tuesday to Department of Education (DepEd) region 8 a number of cellphone units to be used by respective DepEd personnel in doing coordinations for ‘Yolanda’ related operations.

Filipino-born American celebrity and member of the Grammy Award-winning group ‘The Black Eyed Peas’, Apl.de.ap, has personally handed over the Smart phone units .

PIA-8 regional director Olive Tiu and team Mindanao have also joined the event. PIA Caraga regional director  and Northern and Northeastern  Mindanao cluster head Abner Caga is looking forward to partnership with Smart that will in turn gives rise to better communication dissemination process. (VLG/PIA-Caraga)


Mass vaccination launched in Tacloban City

TACLOBAN CITY, Nov. 27 (PIA) – The fight against measles and polio kicked-off in this city on Tuesday, November 26, in an effort to prevent infectious disease outbreaks, said Department of Health (DOH) regional director Jose Llacuna, Jr.

Llacuna said they have targeted children in areas hardest hit by the disaster—starting with the evacuation centers in the city of Tacloban.

The on-going activity provides supplemental immunization against measles and polio for children under five years old and below, free of charge.

“They will also be given Vitamin A drops to boost their immune systems,” he said.

Llacuna said that mass immunization and vitamin A supplementation are immediate health priorities especially after a disaster for infectious diseases like measles spread quickly when people are living in unhygienic and overcrowded conditions such as evacuation centers. (FEA/PIA-Caraga)


DOH-8 reports deaths due to leptospirosis, tetanus

TACLOBAN CITY, Nov. 27 (PIA) - The Department of Health (DOH) in Eastern Visayas reported two deaths due to tetanus and leptospirosis in typhoon-affected areas.

DOH Assistant Secretary Paulyn Rosell-Ubial said that at present, they have received 13 suspected cases due to leptospirosis with one death.

As for tetanus cases, Ubial said 10 cases were reported with one death.

“I would like to inform the public especially those who need medical attention to visit our hospitals, we have already eight functional hospitals in the region,” said Ubial.

The five hospitals can now perform major surgical operations such as the Eastern Visayas Medical Center, Remedios T. Romualdez Hospital, Divine Word University Hospital (formerly St. Paul), Field Hospitals of Australia and Germany located at Palo, Leyte. “While the other three primary hospitals are accepting out-patient services and minor operations,” Ubial added. Caraga Conference for Peace & Dev't celebrates Peace Month

BUTUAN CITY, Nov. 27 (PIA) – The Caraga Conference for Peace and Development (CCPD) is celebrating once again this year’s Mindanao Week of Peace (MWOP) from November 28 to December 6, 2013.

“Despite the sad events in the neighboring islands, we do not forget that November is the month to celebrate peace in Mindanao,” said Most Rev. Juan de Dios Pueblos, CCPD/MWOP Convenor.

Bishop Pueblos also encouraged the public to spend a week of inner peace through prayers and penance, and maintain active involvement in efforts to alleviate human suffering in Bohol, Samar, Leyte, Cebu, Ilo-ilo, Antique, Aklan, Masbate, Palawan and the smaller islands affected by the recent disasters.

“In the midst of sadness, confusion and misery in some parts of the country these days, let us celebrate the Mindanao Week of Peace in a very special way,” added Pueblos.

This year’s MWOP celebration is anchored on the theme “Dialogue and Hope – Our Key to Peace.” The theme inspires us to show compassion to one another and keep our hopes high in order to experience peace. (JPG/PIA-Caraga)


Tagalog News: Barkong hospital ng China dumating na sa Pilipinas para tumulong sa mga biktima ng bagyong Yolanda

AGUSAN DEL SUR, Nob. 27 - (Lunsod ng Tacloban) Isang barkong hospital mula sa China ay dumating dito sa Pilipinas noong linggo para mag-lay ng kanilang medical na tulong doon sa mga naapektohan ng malakas na bagyong “Yolanda” (Haiyan).

Ayon kay Chinese ambassador Ma Keqing, ang hospital na barko “Peace Ark” ay naghulog ng angkla sampung milya mula sa daongan dahil napakalaki nito para dumaong sa kahit saan pantalan.

“Inaasahan ko na ito ay malaking tulong”, Ito ang sabi ni Ma sa mga reporters kahit sinabi rin niya na ibibyahe pa ang mga pasyente patungo sa hospital na barko at pabalik gamit ang ferry.

Sinabi rin ni Ma na ang barko ay may lulan na mahigit 100 doktor na gagamot sa sari-saring karamdamang medikal.

Ang “Peace Ark” ay parte ng gamundong pagsisikap para tulungan ang Pilipinas, pagkatapos na ito ay hagupitin ng bagyong Yolanda ang Visayas at Southern Luzon at nag-iwan ng mahigit 5,000 na patay.

AGUSAN DEL SUR, Nob. 27 - Ang paglipat ng mga apektadong pamilya mula sa kanilang tolda at evacuation centers papunta sa temporaryong tirahan na bunkhouses ay sinyales ng pagkabawi mula sa pagtulong papunta ng maagang pagbangon at pagbukod para sa mga komunidad na naapektohan ng bagyo ayon kay Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr.

Bilang sagot sa direktiba ng Pangulong Benigno Aquino III, ang Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) ay nagsimulang magtayo ng mga bunkhouses sa mga ininalagang lugar sa Tacloban, Palo at Ormoc sa Leyte, at Basey at Marabut sa Samar sa linggong ito, sabi ni Coloma ng siya ay nakipagpulong sa mga mamamahayag sa Malakanyang noong Martes.

Ang pagtatayo ng mga bunkhouses sa Guiuan, Hernani at Borongan nagsimula na noong Lunes, sabi ni Sec. Coloma.

“Kung isa-alang-alang, mga 2,400 na pamilya ay maaring ilipat dito sa unang bugso. Sa pakikipag-ugnayan sa lokal na pamahalaan, ang DPWH ay nagsimulang ihanda ang mga napiling lugar para maisaayos ang paglipat sa mga bunkhouses na nakompleto na,” sabi ni Coloma.

Hinahanda rin ng DPWH ang tamang pundo ng mga materyales para sa konstruksiyon tulad ng kahoy mula sa niyog, mga balangkas na kahoy at mga yero para sa bubong para ipamigay sa mga apektadong pamilya na bahay ay di gaanong napinsala para sila ay makabalik na sa kanilang mga bahay sa lalong madaling panahon, sabi ni Coloma.

“Habang ang mga tao sa Leyte at Samar ay nagsimulang mag-ayos at ipatayong muli ang kanilang tahanan, sila ay pinakikilos para sumali sa pagsisikap na ipagpatayong muli ang mga gusali sa ilalim ng programang cash-for-work o food for work,” sabi ni Coloma.

“Sa karagdagan, ang Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) ay nakahandang ilatag ang isang pang-emerhensiyang patrabahong programa, na magbubukas ng 12,500 na trabaho kung saan ang mga manggagawa ay magsagawa ng pag-aayos at paglilinis sa kapaligiran,” sabi ni Coloma. (DMS/PIA-Agusan del Sur)

BUTUAN CITY, Nov. 27 - Ang Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) ang nangita  og lugar para sa mangrove ug beach forest sa dunay 380 kilometro sa baybayon sa Eastren Visayas apil ang Leyte ug uban pang parte nga naigo sa Typhoon Yolanda, aron maprotektahan ang mga komunidad batok sa makalilisang nga epekto sa moabotay pang bagyo.
            
Si DENR Secretary Ramon J.P. Paje nag-ingon nga  ang resulta sa nahitabong bagyo naghatag  og importansya sa  mga panghinanglanon sa pagbalik   sa maayong sitwasyon sa mga naguba nga coastal forest aron maubsan nga pagkadaot ninini dala sa kusog nga bagyo.
               
Si Paje nagsaysay nga ang massive tree planting ubos sa National Greening Program o NGP ang nahitabo sa baybayong lugar sa Tacloban City ug Dulag  lungsod sa Leyte; musipalidad sa Guiuan, Llorente ug Balangiga sa Eastern Samar ug lunsod sa Basey Leyte aron mahatagan og panginabuhian ang mga residente sa pagtukod og building o “green wall” batok sa storm surges.
            
Matud pa ni Paje “Sa pagbalik sa coastal areas, nakit-an namo ang oppurtunidad aron masugdan  na kini sa lugar sa Eastern Leyte , siya midugang nga sa nahitabong pagkuso-kuso sa bagyong Yolanda sa Eastren Visayas kini nakahatag og atensyon unsa ka importante ang mangrove ug ang beach forest belts.”
            
Ang Secretary nagsaysay nga ang departamento nangita og paagi aron mailisan ang mga government-leased pond ngadto sa mangroves” aron maprotektahan ang mga baybayon, kuhaanan og pagkoan ug panginabuhian sa kumunidad duol sa mga baybayon.
