World Population Day: Crusade for youth up
By May Ann O. Escobal
BUTUAN CITY, July 9 (PIA) - The Commission on
Population (PopCom) here joins the world as it commemorates World Population
Day on July 11th with this year’s theme, “Investing in Young People”.
In its in-depth analysis of relevant data,
PopCom sees the impact of growing youth population on their own growth and
development. PopCom Caraga regional director Alexander A. Makinano pointed-out
that the increasing numbers of out-of-school and unemployed youth gravely
affect the socio-economic development of the country. However, Makinano
stressed the importance of giving support to the youth by providing them
quality and decent education for this will create greater opportunities in the
future.
Moreover, Makinano emphasized that investing in
adolescents and young people by promoting healthy habits and ensuring education
and employment opportunities, access to health services, and social security
coverage for all workers is the best investment to improve the lives of future
generations and to accelerate the fight against poverty, inequity and gender
discrimination.
According to the United Nations Population Fund
(UNFPA), there are 1.8 billion people aged 10-24 in the world, making one
quarter of the world’s population. Those comprising adolescents (aged 10-19)
and youth (aged 15-24).
In addition, a study revealed that in the
Philippines, majority of the country’s population (33% of 92.3M) consists of
the youth – those who are 30 years old and below; about 2.04 million youths
aging 15 to 30 years old are unemployed. Further, in its 2011 report, the
National Statistics Office said that about 6.24 million of the estimated 39
million Filipinos aged 6 to 24 did not attend school and that figure is much
higher than that 4.8 million children reported to have stayed out of schools in
the 2002 Annual Poverty Indicators Survey (APIS).
In line with the theme, PopCom Caraga shall
conduct a Youth Fair on the 11th of July and various activities will be done in
cooperation with the different schools and offices of the city. (PopCom-13/PIA-Caraga)
SurSur agri chief confirms move to organic
farming
By Greg Tataro Jr.
TANDAG CITY, July 9 (PIA) – Following the report
on Monday of Surigao del Sur assistant provincial agriculturist (APA) Esmeraldo
Odtohan on the effort of the local administration to transform the province
into an “organic crop producer,” no less than chief provincial agriculturist
Marcos Quico confirmed the move.
Odtohan said before capitol employees during the
regular Monday flag ceremony program that the province is eventually going to
be a producer of organic agricultural products in the future.
In fact, the APA pointed out that there is now a
200-hectare banana plantation in Hinatuan town, which employs “organic
cultivation” in growing the said crop, indicating that the use of synthetic
fertilizers, insecticides, and other modern farming technologies which might
compromise a healthy lifestyle and environment is strictly a “no-no.”
Meanwhile, Quico said that the “concept” to
shift to organic farming has started way back during the administration of
former governor, now Carrascal mayor Vicente Pimentel, Jr.
Likewise, he stressed that vice governor Manuel
Alameda, Sr. has also backed up the program as manifested in his “Duma
Ordinance” which promotes the serving of local delicacies produced out of “root
crops” in any government-sponsored activities or gatherings together with other
dishes.
Quico has strongly believed that in due time
this move to shift to organic agriculture will gain more support from industry
producers. (NGBT/Radyo ng Bayan/PIA-Surigao del Sur)
