Dinagat Islands promotes organic farming

By Ma. Jane Mayola

SAN JOSE, Dinagat Islands, August 19 (PIA) - The provincial government of Dinagat Islands through the Provincial Agriculture Office promoted the organic farming by conducting a one-day training on mushroom production and propagation held recently at Nagaso Resto Grill, Cuarinta, San Jose, this town.

The activity aims to promote integrated livelihood system for all farmers and fisherman from the municipalities of the province.

According to Provincial Agriculturist Oswaldo T. Borja, the mushroom propagation is beneficial to farmers not only because of extra income but it is also a good alternative source of livelihood since crop production is a bit risky nowadays due to unpredictable climate change.

The participants on the said activity were farmers and fisherfolks from the municipalities of San Jose and Dinagat. (SDR/PIO-Dinagat Islands/PIA-Dinagat Islands)

SurSur guv brags feat on curbing poverty incidence

By Greg Tataro Jr.

TANDAG CITY, Aug. 19 (PIA) – Surigao del Sur Governor Johnny Pimentel bragged that the province has curbed poverty incidence by significant extent since 2012.

He said recently that “We are now moving forward,” referring to the comparative economic status of the province a couple of years back.

Pimentel cited that in 2012, Surigao del Sur was just tailing behind Agusan del Norte.

However, in 2013, he stressed that the province has already “overtaken” Agusan del Norte, making Surigao del Sur “the best performing province in terms of reducing poverty incidence in the entire Caraga region.”

Gov. Pimentel was also glad to note the mention of Surigao del Sur in one of the most well-read columns of the country’s top national dailies, saying that the province is considered “as one of the best performing provinces in terms of poverty reduction in the entire country.”

“But for the first semester of 2014, we have further reduced our poverty incidence to 28 percent—one of the lowest in the entire country,” he pointed out.

Prior to this, he said that the figure was posted at 36 percent in 2012 and 31 percent in 2013. (NGBT/Radyo ng Bayan/PIA-Surigao del Sur)

SurSur to host 2015 Caraga Regional Athletic Meet anew

By Greg Tataro Jr.

TANDAG CITY, Aug. 19 (PIA) – Governor Johnny Pimentel has announced that the hosting of the province of Surigao del Sur of the 18th Caraga Regional Athletic Meet (CRAM) by 2015 is final.

In a meeting on Friday, last week, of the Caraga Regional Sports Board headed by DepEd Regional Director Atty. Alberto Escobarte, which he attended, the governor said that he relented to the request since, “according to them, the 17th CRAM was a huge success and according to them, the other provinces and cities are not yet ready to hold the 18th CRAM.”

“OK, no problem—we will hold the CRAM in the province of Surigao del Sur next year to be held on February 22,” he told the DepEd officials, whom he described to be so persistent.

Prior to making the formal announcement on Monday, he admitted to capitol employees during the regular flag ceremony program that he was “hesitant” of making a repeat of what the province did early this year due to financial requisite—referring to the hosting of the 17th CRAM.

On the other hand, Gov. Pimentel remarked, “So, if I am not mistaken, this is the only province that will host the CRAM for two consecutive years.”

It will be recalled that last week, Pimentel has already hinted being amenable to the idea, saying in vernacular that “It’s just OK for me to play host. But, then, again, we need to work.” (NGBT/Radyo ng Bayan/PIA-Surigao del Sur)
