AgNor solon pushes for creation of Lake Mainit
Development Authority
BUTUAN CITY, Sept. 19 (PIA) – Agusan del Norte second
district representative Erlpe John M. Amante pushed for the approval of House
Bill No. 4764 in congress creating the Lake Mainit Development Authority
(LMDA).
His co-author of the said bill is Cong. Guillermo
A. Romarate, Jr. of Surigao del Norte.
With the creation of the Authority, it is
envisioned that Lake Mainit will become a major economic engine in Caraga
Region and the whole of Mindanao. It shall be a model for sustainable lake
development that is anchored on social mobilization and environmental
protection.
Lake Mainit, straddling between the provinces of
Agusan del Norte and Surigao del Norte, is endowed by nature with rich natural
resources that remain to be untapped up to now. Being a sanctuary for fishes,
crustaceans, and other marine life, Lake Mainit has become a major host of
aquaculture and other livelihood activities for locals living near its shores.
Currently, a hydropower plant is also being
constructed using the lakes outflow current as a testament that Lake Mainit can
become a major course of power in Mindanao.
The scenic beauty of the lake also suggests of
its potential to become a prime lake resort destination that can rival other
well-known tourist spots. Its strategic location along the Pan-Philippine
Friendship Highway furthermore makes tourism development even more feasible.

MIRDC conducts training for Surigao Norte
fabricators
By Glory Joy D. Arconada
SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte, Sept. 19 (PIA) -
Due to the rapid increase of mining firms in the province, metals and
engineering sector is one of the major growing industries in Surigao del Norte.
Thus, to provide Surigaonon welders the
knowledge and enhance their skills in metal working processes and fabrication,
the Provincial Science and Technology Center- Surigao del Norte (PSTC-SDN), in
collaboration with Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC),
recently conducted a back-to-back training on Tungsten Inert Gas/Metal Inert
Gas (TIG/MIG) Welding and Wrought Iron Forming at Arriba Steel Industries
Barangay Luna, here.
Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding utilizes
non-consumable tungsten, welding two pieces together in which the tungsten
electrode provides the electricity. While it can use filler, it sometimes creates
a weld where one part melts into another. On the other hand, Metal Inert Gas or
Metal Active Gas (MIG-MAG) welding combines two pieces of metals with a
consumable wire connected to an electrode current, which heats the workpiece
metals, causing them to melt, and join.
Engr. Jojit M. Velasco, Science Research
Specialist II of DOST-MIRDC discussed the principles of TIG welding. He also
demonstrated techniques on welding.
Safety measures in handling the TIG and MIG-MAG
welding operations were emphasized.
Engr. Edilbert M. dela PeΓ±a, Senior Science Research Specialist of MIRDC,
discussed the different metal
classifications, metal cutting, forming and joining. He demonstrated the MIRDC
developed tools that could easily formed
rounded, curled and spiraled outputs.
The training were participated by 25 welders
from various machine shops in Surigao del Norte . These include the Arriba
Steel Industry; Alpha Kairos Omega and Metal Works (ALKO); Albie Machine Shop;
Century Steel Fabrication; Letim Welding Shop; and REV-Ann Machine Shop.
During the training, DOST’s small and medium
enterprises upgrading program was presented. As a result, REV-Ann Machine shop
signified its intention to avail the program. (PSTC-SDN/PIA-Caraga)
AGUSAN DEL SUR, Sept.
Sur)
