Former NPA bomb expert killed in Surigao del Sur

BUTUAN CITY, Nov. 9 (PIA) – A former rebel
identified as Caleb Rebrtchie Labanan was shot to death early morning on Monday
at Sitio Greenfield, Sta Juana, Tagbina, Surigao del Sur.
Accordingly, the victim was in his farm when five
unidentified armed men wearing bonnets approached and shot him several times.
The victim sustained three gunshot wounds in his body particularly in his head,
chest and shoulder causing his tragic demise.
The perpetrators allegedly withdrew immediately
after the crime was committed towards Sitio, Katipunan, Bunawan Brooks,
Bunawan, Agusan del Sur.
The victim was known to have served as peace
advocate and has performed counterinsurgency efforts in Caraga region as he
finally sided the government after his growing realization of the dreadful
communist terrorist activities he was into and being the skilled human asset in
making explosive devices of the rebel group, it was learned. These made him
become one of the targets for liquidation of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New
People's Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF) or CNN.
The incident was allegedly perpetrated or
sanctioned by the CNN specifically the GFC 14, NEMRC considering that said
group has just concluded the recruitment of Milisya ng Bayan (MBs) in Bunawan Brooks, Bunawan, Agusan del
Sur, and that the incident seemed to be a test mission of the newly recruited
MBs.

Surigao Norte Tourism Office to attend tourism
development planning for LGUs in Pasig City

SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte, Nov. 9 (PIA) – The
Provincial Tourism Office of Surigao del Norte will attend a four-day Tourism
Development Planning for local government units (LGUs) set on November 14-18,
2016 at the DAP Building, Pasig City.
The four-day planning workshop will be spearheaded
by the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP), which seeks to enhance the
knowledge and skills of local government unit officials, particularly the local
chief executive, Sangguniang chairperson on Tourism, tourism officer,
provincial planning and development officer, and other tourism stakeholders.
Surigao del Norte Provincial Tourism and Culture
Officer Arturo M. Cruje said the activity specifically aims to provide
participants with an understanding of tourism development in the Philippines,
and local development planning process from analysis of local tourism situation
to adopting and financing local development plan.
He said at the end of the workshop, the
participants would have formulated their LGU’s local tourism development plan
concepts.
Cruje further said that the province gives
preferential attention to the development of the tourism industry being a major
employment generating industry in the country where unemployment and
underemployment are still societal problems.
Governor Sol Matugas is encouraging the LGUs to

SurSur NGO launches aquaculture project

TANDAG CITY, Surigao del Sur, Nov. 9 (PIA) – The
Nagkahiusang Mananagat sa Tigao or NAMATI successfully launched on Tuesday,
Nov. 8 its bangus (milkfish), danggit (rabbitfish) and lobster Production
project at Tigao Sanctuary in Cortes town, this province.
According to NAMATI chairperson Teddy Canda, the
said project worth P1.245 Million was jointly funded by the local government
unit of Cortes, Department of Social Welfare and Development thru the
Sustainable Livelihood Program (DSWD-SLP), and Department of Labor and
Employment (DOLE).
Cortes Mayor William Angos graced the launching
program with the presence of some members of the Tri Media Association of
Surigao Sur, representatives from DOLE, and NAMATI members.
Mayor Angos said their assistance is part of the
LGU's development plan under his administration.
On the other hand, Canda said that after about 20
years of existence of the said organization, this is the first time that the
local government of Cortes town has extended financial assistance to them.

60 responders undergo contingency planning for
emergencies in Bislig

TANDAG CITY, Surigao del Sur, Nov. 9 (PIA) – Some
60 participants from the Bislig City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management
Council (DRRMC) and Task Force LIB or Local Incidence of Bislig underwent a
three-day Seminar Workshop Formulation for Contingency Planning for Earthquake
held at Highland Function Farm, John Bosco District, Mangagoy, Bislig City.
According to Surigao del Sur Provincial DRRM
officer Abel de Guzman, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and the Provincial
DRRMO facilitated the activity, which started on Nov. 7 until Nov. 9.
During the planning workshop activity, the group was able to formulate the
contingency plan for earthquake with secondary effect to structural damages,
fire and tsunami.
One of the participants, Youreallylove Sango of
city DRRM office said that considering that Bislig City is about 200 kilometers
away from the Philippine trench, the possibility to experience severe
structural damages, fire incidents, and locally generated tsunami is high if
magnitude 8 tectonic earthquake will take place.
Meanwhile, Bislig City DRRMC members recently
finished the level four on Incident Command System (ICS) Training on All Hazard

Tagalog News: Caraga Food Safe Campaign pinaigting
ng DOST, Winrock International at PIA Caraga

BUTUAN CITY, Nob. 9 (PIA) – Mas pinaigting pa ang
kampanya sa publiko tungo sa malinis at ligtas na pagkaing nabibili sa mga
pamilihan sa rehiyon ng Caraga matapos nailunsad at nilagdaan ang Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) ng Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Winrock
International – Philippine Cold Chain Project (PCCP) at Philippine Information
Agency (PIA) Caraga dito sa lungsod.
Ayon kay DOST Caraga regional director Dominga
Mallonga, na siya ring nangunguna sa Caraga Food Safety Team, ang nasabing
kampanya ay base sa Republic Act 10611 o ang Food Safety Act of 2013 - ang
batas na nagpapatibay sa food safety regulatory system sa bansa na
nagproprotekta sa kalusugan ng mga konsumante at nagtataguyod sa mga lokal na
pagkain at produkto.
Dagdag pa ni Mallonga, ang Food Safe Caraga ay
isang information at education campaign ng Caraga Food Safety Team na binubuo
ng ibat-ibang ahensya ng gobyerno, kasama ang ibang partners sa non-government
at civil society organizations.
Napag-alaman rin na ang Food Safe Caraga campaign
ay naka-focus sa dalawang major components. Nagbibigay umano ito ng training
programme on meat handling para sa mga meat shop operators, workers at meat
vendors. At layon din ng nasabing kampanya na mapabuti pa ang food handling practices
ng mga residente sa rehiyon at ito ay sa pamamagitan ng pagamit ng teknolohiya
at media.
Sinigurado rin ng PIA na buo ang suportang ibibigay
nito at gagamitin ng ahensya at lahat ng plataporma maiparating lang sa publiko
ang mahahalagang impormasyon tungkol sa kampanya.
Ibinahagi rin ni Winrock International chief of
party na si Dan Gudahl ang kanilang layuning matulungan ang mga Caraganon na
makaiwas sa ibat-ibang sakit na dulot ng marumi at di-tamang paghahanda ng
pagkain. Ang Winrock International ang syang magbibigay sa kinakailangang
suport-pinansyal para sa nasabing kampanya.
Samantala, naging saksi naman si DOST Secretary
Fortunato Dela Pena sa naging paglagda ng MOU ng mga nabanggit na ahensya at
pinuri ang kanilang naging inisyatibo para sa Caraga Food Safe Campaign.
Ang Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of
Health (DOH), at Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) ay kabilang rin sa mga
