DENR calls to combat biodiversity loss, protect
wildlife
By Johny S. Natad
TANDAG CITY, Surigao del Sur, June 9 (PIA) – The
Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has renewed its call to
all Filipino people to help fight against biodiversity damage and protect
wildlife in the country as the agency commemorates Philippine Environment
Month.
DENR Sec. Ramon J.P. Paje urged every Filipino to
help save and protect the environment and natural resources which are the vital
sources of food, livelihood and leisure. Specifically, he renewed his call to
help in the fight to save and protect the majestic Philippine eagle
(Pithecophaga jefferyi), as the nation celebrates the Philippine Eagle Week
(PEW) from June 4-10 with the theme “Saving eagles, Protecting forests,
Securing our future: Stop the Killings.”
“The Philippine Eagle is a unique heritage, found
only in this part of the world that needs to be nurtured as it is the Filipino
people’s gift to the global community,” Secretary Paje said. “There is a need
to usher in a renewed commitment to protect the eagle and other wildlife from
extinction and allow them to perpetuate for future generations,” he added.
In celebrating the whole month of June as
Philippine Environment month, Secretary Paje encouraged everybody to reaffirm
its commitment and action on the critical role to save and protect the
environment.
“We celebrate Environment Month this year with the
renewed and strengthened conviction to care for the land we live on, the air we
breathe, and the water which gives us life. More than any time in this planet’s
history, it is now that we must put our acts together to combat increasing
threats to our ecosystems,” Secretary Paje pointed out.
Meanwhile, Surigao del Sur OIC PENR Officer Raul
Rosales appealed all Surigaonons to revive their dedication and support in the
environmental initiatives and advocacies.
With this year’s Environment Month theme, “Go Wild
for Life, Combat Biodiversity Loss. Beat Climate Change,” PENRO Rosales said
that the fight against environmental crimes is the key to prevent biodiversity
loss and mitigate global climate change.
“The fight against wildlife trade, illegal
logging, and other environmental offences must continue with the help of
everyone,” PENRO Rosales said.
“The natural calamities brought by global climate
change are the result of biodiversity loss and environmental crimes which have
already affected our economy and livelihood particularly in agriculture and
fishery sectors. By reviving our commitments to save and protect our
environment, we can restore our biodiversity, preserve our wildlife, beat
climate change, and sustain the lives of people enjoying the natural resources
and clean and healthy environment,” PENRO Rosales emphasized. (PENRO-SDS/PIA-Surigao

Mindanao’s RE push to boost PHL’s clean energy
agenda
MANILA, June 9 (PIA) - A focused target to keep
Mindanao’s energy mix diversified with premium on renewable energy (RE) sources
augurs well for the country’s clean energy agenda, says an official from
MalacaΓ±ang’s economic think-tank in Mindanao.
Romeo M. Montenegro, director for Investment
Promotion and Public Affairs of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) said
that accelerating RE projects points to a logical way forward of achieving an
ideal energy mix.
Speaking to reporters at the sidelines of the Asia
Clean Energy Forum 2016 at the ADB Headquarters in Pasig City, Montenegro cited
that Mindanao’s current energy mix of 60-40 in favor of RE will see significant
reversal to 70-30 dominated by fossil in 2018.
Latest report from the Department of Energy (DOE)
indicated a total of 1,800 megawatts (MW) of additional capacity in Mindanao
from coal-fired power plants coming online by 2018, with the first 300MW from
Aboitiz Therma South already delivering power to the grid since late last year.
In a bid to offset the rise of fossil and keep a
balanced energy mix in Mindanao, MinDA, through its Mindanao Power Monitoring
Committee has set-up a One Stop Facilitation and Monitoring Center to help
accelerate deployment of RE projects in the island.
The monitoring system, developed with support from
USAID’s Climate Change and Clean Energy (CEnergy) Project, currently tracks the
progress of 284 RE projects in Mindanao, mostly in the pre-development stage
and with a total potential generation capacity of 3,773 MW. DOE had since
adopted the system to include RE projects in the Visayas and Luzon, through a
mechanism called Energy Virtual One Shared System (EVOSS).
“We want to purposively address a ‘business as
usual’ scenario where majority of Mindanao’s energy sources by 2030 will come
from mostly fossil technology, and now is the time to trigger rapid RE
deployment,” Montenegro stressed.
Considered as a trailblazing government
facilitation project to promote clean energy sources, MinDA and DOE are set to
showcase the program as a 'best practice' at the USAID-organized Asia Low
Emissions Development Strategies (LEDS) Forum later this month in Hanoi,
Vietnam.
Mindanao, which is relatively well endowed with
renewable energy sources mostly hydro, is aiming to achieve a regime of
reliable, sustainable and reasonable power.
Last year, the Philippines submitted its Intended
Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) to the United Nations (UN),
committing to cut by 70 percent its carbon emissions by 2030.
In keeping with the committed target, the
government is looking at reviewing current energy policies with the end view of
creating and enforcing a conducive policy framework to stimulate clean energy
investments. (MinDA/PIA-Caraga)
