DENR-PENRO AgSur to conduct river clean-up for Ocean Month celebration

PROSPERIDAD, Agusan del Sur, May
21 - In celebration of Month of the Ocean (MOO), the Department of Environment
and Natural Resources -Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office
(DENR-PENRO) in Patin-ay, Prosperidad this province will conduct a river
clean-up at Minabang creek, San Francisco on May 24, 2019.
The clean-up activity, that is set
to start at 6:00 a.m., will be participated in by approximately 200 volunteers
from national and government agencies, local government units , students and
residents of the four barangays adjacent to the creek.

incharge, encouraged the volunteers to bring clean-up tools such as sticks,
rakes and used sacks and to wear appropriate working attire with rubber gloves
and boots.
They are also advised to bring
tumbler in lieu of single-use plastics as the PENRO will only provide water for
refill.
This year’s theme “Free the Sea
From Marine Debris” is centered on the rising issues concerning marine
debris and its effects to coastal and marine biodiversity.
This initiative aims to help
address the global ocean concern posed by plastic pollution.
The MOO is celebrated annually in
the Philippines during the month of May by virtue of Presidential Proclamation
No. 157, which aims to highlight the importance and significance of the
conservation, protection and sustainable management of country’s coastal and
marine resources.
The law also mandates the DENR and
the Department of Agriculture through the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic
Resources (DA-BFAR) to spearhead the activities of MOO in collaboration with
the different sectors of the society.
As one of the agency’s
interventions in sustaining the effective management of the country’s
environment and natural resources, PENRO Agusan del Sur embolden all Agusanons
to be responsible and to actively participate in this endeavor.
