Butuan dad calls on Agusanons to help keep
Agusan River clean

BUTUAN CITY, Aug. 5 (PIA) -- The
Butuanons and Agusanons, together with the officials of the local government
unit and workers from government agencies gathered early morning on Sunday,
July 28 for this year’s celebration of the Abayan Festival at the Agusan River,
this city.
The fluvial procession was the
main highlight of the festival, as a way of giving value to the mighty Agusan
river and its patroness Santa Ana.
In his message, Butuan City Mayor
Ronnie Vicente Lagnada called on all Butuanons and Agusanons to continue to
give value and preserve the scenic spots, natural heritage and cleanliness of
the Agusan River as it gives life to the tourism industry of the city.
He further urged everyone to
sustain proper waste segregation and prevent throwing of plastic wastes in the
river.
Apart from the fluvial parade,
people also witnessed the ‘baroto’ race participated by young adults and women
sector who have great interest in sailing sport.
Reah Umpad, a 40-year old
participant of the “baroto” race from a women's organization, bared that they
wanted people from outside Butuan to see how clean and enticing the Agusan
River is. She also stressed that all are united with the local government
towards promoting the tourism development in Butuan.
“I hope the public not only from
this city, but also from other provinces could see how clean the Agusan River
is, and would have better appreciation of its scenic beauty,” said Umpad.
Michael Jepson Oriba, a grade 12
student and member of the dragon boat team also shared their team’s vision and
advocacy towards protecting the environment and the Agusan River. He said, the
youth’s participation in promoting the tourism of Butuan is of great help to

SurSur holds DRR-CCA Summit for IPMR

TANDAG CITY, Surigao del
Sur, Aug. 5 (PIA) – The provincial government of Surigao del Sur thru the
Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) spearheaded
the Disaster Risk Reduction-Climate Change Adaptation (DRR-CCA) Summit for
Indigenous People’s Mandatory Representatives (IPMRs) held on July 30 at the
Villa Maria Luisa Hotel this city.
According to National Commission
on Indigenous People (NCIP) Surigao del Sur chief Engr. Charlyn Binghoy, some
110 IPMRs were officially installed in Surigao del Sur composed of one
Provincial IPMR, 14 Municipal IPMRs, one City IPMR, and 94 Barangay IPMRs
province-wide.
As part of the provincial
government's support to the IP communities, a livelihood assistance worth
P500,000.00 was earlier announced by Governor Alexander Pimentel to be given to
the lumad community of Sitio Ibuan, Barangay Mampi in Lanuza town.
Surigao del Sur was the first
province in Caraga to hold such activity with the IPMRs in the region, PDRRMO
chief Abel De Guzman noted.
During the activity, Alan Ray Ribo
from PAGASA Hinatuan shared to the participants the Public Storm Warning Signal
Updates.
The participants were able to ask
some clarificatory questions to the speaker based on the experiences they have
from the past calamities.
Amado Posas from the Office of the
Civil Defense-Caraga shared the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and
Management System, while Engr. Joselito Ramos, a speaker from the Department of
Interior and Local Government (DILG), shared the overview of the “Operation
Listo.”
The Performance Review/Duties and
Responsiblities of the IPMR were also discussed and elaborated by Ordonia
Rocero from the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP).
Some IP health issues and concerns
were also brought up during the activity with the presence of the Provincial
Health Office (PHO) chief, Dr. Eric Montescalros.
The said activity formed part of
the National Disaster Resilience Month celebration in partnership with the NCIP
