Eco-friendly human waste
management isinusulong ng DOST Caraga

LUNGSOD
NG BUTUAN, Marso 17 -- Isinusulong ng Department of Science and Technology
(PIA-Caraga)

DOST Caraga pushes
for sustainable human waste management

BUTUAN
CITY, Mar. 17 (PIA) -- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Caraga
is now advocating for an eco-friendly alternative for human waste management
through the Eco-friendly Septic Tank System or Ecosep.
Compared
to the ordinary septic tank, Ecosep makes use of Vigormin, an organo mineral
used to hasten the decomposition process of the bacteria found in human waste
in order to prevent contamination in sewerage system.
This
was an innovation by Dr. Merlinda Palencia, a Filipino inventor from Adamson
University. The said organo mineral was also used during the successful
redevelopment of Boracay Island in 2018.
According
to DOST Caraga Regional Director Dominga Mallonga, anyone can avail and install
Ecosep since both the equipment and the Vigormin can be purchased from their
office.
After
conducting the pilot testing in Siargao Island, the science department is
planning on expanding the usage of Ecosep in different parts of the country
especially in crowded places such as food establishments. DOST Secretary
Fortunato Dela PeΓ±a furthered that the said septic tank is ideal for the said
establishments to maintain the sanitation of their environment.
The
said project is under the Research and Development Project of the agency. This
is also part of the heightened inspection of the food establishments in the
region through the Food Establishments Inspection and Grading System (FEIGS) of
DOST Caraga.
At
present, an Ecosep has been installed in Sugba Lagoon, one of the most popular
tourist destinations in the municipality of Del Carmen in Siargao Island.
