BAROBO,
Surigao del Sur -- Through the Bangus Deboning and Bottling Training on Oct
12-14, the Anunang Gamut Fisherfolks Association (AGFA) in Barangay Anunang,
Barobo, Surigao del Sur was introduced to a new set of skills to help them earn
additional profit for the family and community.
Maricel J.
Maturan, Fisheries Postharvest and Marketing Section staff of BFAR showed the
activities which were followed by the participants.
According
to Rubelyn Cahiles, wife of an AGFA member, the learning gives more relevance
to them as women in the community.
"While
our husbands are busy in the sea, we can do deboning and bottling. It's an
extra income for the family and community plus a sustainable livelihood for us
women in the house," said Rubelyn.
With the
abundance of Bangus in the area, an overproduction forces the fisher folks to
sell their harvest at a lower price, losing the chance of additional profit.
Now, with the acquired knowledge of processing, the excess Bangus can already
be sold at a reasonable price.
Furthermore,
Barobo's local government showed support by providing an estimate of P64,000
worth of materials for the start-up of their Bangus bottling and deboning
business.
In line
with the goals of PRDP, the training intervention supports the Bangus
Marketing and Production in Barobo. It aims to increase the marketable volume
of Bangus from 11,000kg to 33,790kg.
Likewise,
an additional enterprise's income of P883,000 from P511,000 and fisherfolk's
earnings from P82,000 to P87,000. (DA-Caraga/PIA-Surigao del Sur)
