DA holds farm technology demo in Madrid town

MADRID, Surigao del Sur -- To increase the adoption of farmers on rice varieties, the Department of Agriculture (DA) Caraga through the Research Division conducted a field day on OneRicePH: Expanded on-farm Technology Demonstration on March 17, 2023, held in Barangay Panayogon, Madrid, Surigao del Sur.

OneRicePH is a collaborative project between the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), the Department of Agriculture, Provincial, and Municipal Local Government Units to unify rice breeding and dissemination strategy for the Philippines to produce quality and healthier rice.

The techno demo showcased the rice varieties NSIC Rc480 and NSIC Rc508. The varieties planted in a 5-hectare demo area, expected to be harvested on the third week of March 2023.

The demo sites have target yield of 7.5 metric tons per hectare compared to the 4.5 metric tons average yield in the municipality.

The report said that those varieties were recommended for irrigated lowland ecosystems.

The activity was graced by DA-Caraga Regional Executive Director of DA-13 Engr. Ricardo M. OΓ±ate, Jr., OneRicePh Project Leader Dr. Oliver E. Manangkil, Provincial Agriculture Office representative, IRRI Researchers, Municipal Agriculture Office personnel, Madrid Municipal officials headed by Mayor Juan Paolo Lopez, Barangay Captains/Chair, Seed Growers, and farmers.
