DA holds farm technology demo in Madrid town
MADRID, Surigao del Sur -- To increase the adoption of farmers on rice
varieties, the Department of Agriculture (DA) Caraga through the Research
Division conducted a field day on OneRicePH: Expanded on-farm Technology
Demonstration on March 17, 2023, held in Barangay Panayogon, Madrid, Surigao del
Sur.
OneRicePH is a collaborative project between the Philippine Rice Research
Institute (PhilRice), the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), the
Department of Agriculture, Provincial, and Municipal Local Government Units to
unify rice breeding and dissemination strategy for the Philippines to produce
quality and healthier rice.
The techno demo showcased the rice varieties NSIC Rc480 and NSIC Rc508. The
varieties planted in a 5-hectare demo area, expected to be harvested on the
third week of March 2023.
The demo sites have target yield of 7.5 metric tons per hectare compared to the
4.5 metric tons average yield in the municipality.
The report said that those varieties were recommended for irrigated lowland
ecosystems.
The activity was graced by DA-Caraga Regional Executive Director of DA-13 Engr.
Ricardo M. OΓ±ate, Jr., OneRicePh Project Leader Dr. Oliver E. Manangkil,
Provincial Agriculture Office representative, IRRI Researchers, Municipal
Agriculture Office personnel, Madrid Municipal officials headed by Mayor Juan
Paolo Lopez, Barangay Captains/Chair, Seed Growers, and farmers.
