DA Caraga strengthens soybean production in PDI
SAN JOSE, Dinagat Islands -- The Department of Agriculture (DA) Caraga in coordination with the Provincial Agriculture Office (PAO) of the province of Dinagat Islands conducted a Soybean Field Day at the Provincial Demonstration Farm in Barangay Justiniana Edera, Dinagat town.
DA Agricultural Program Coordinating Office (APCO) Dinagat Islands Chief Rey U. Frias said that the activity served as an avenue to disseminate significant information on soybean production, processing and utilization and to showcase soybean as an economical and nutritious food and feed alternative.
Noli G. Orog of the DA-Caraga's corn program said that soybean is one of the ingredients of animal feeds. With this, he underlined the expansion of soybean production as support to the Sustainable Feed Production Program dubbed "Team Bahug," a program of the DA Caraga which promotes utilization of locally available raw materials to produce quality but affordable feeds.
Orog also emphasized the importance of producing quality soybeans for farmers to be able to command a good price in the market.
On the other hand, Provincial Agriculturist Rico Galinato said that the PDI plans to establish its own feed mill soon and the promotion of soybean production in the province is one of the preparations they are undertaking.
Participants also took a field tour to the soybean demo farm where soybean focal person, Tijani B. Auxtero discussed the soybean production and processing. This half-hectare techno demo farm is planted with the local soybean variety known as Manchuria. (DA- Caraga/PIA- Dinagat Islands)
