Surigao City vies for nat’l disaster resilience award

SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte -- The City of Surigao has been identified as a finalist in the prestigious 2023 National Disaster Resilience Champions Award, a competition that seeks to honor local heroes in disaster resilience.

This recognition was spearheaded by project localized Weather, Environment, and Hydromet Monitoring System (WEHLO), in collaboration with Usher Technologies and the Mapua University School of CivilEnvironmental, and Geological Engineering.

WEHLO is a 24/7 localized weather-impact monitoring system designed to assist local government units in mitigating the effects of severe weather events.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) led by Threlzcie Villaces earned a well-deserved spot among the finalists due to its dedicated efforts in disaster resilience.

This acknowledgment underscored the CDRRMO's commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the community in the face of natural disasters and other challenges.

The awards ceremony is scheduled in January 2024, which will showcase Surigao City’s platform on exemplary resilience initiatives. (Surigao City-PIO/PIA-Surigao del Norte)
