By Nida Grace P. Barcena

TANDAG, Surigao del Sur -- The provincial government of Surigao del Sur headed by Governor Alexander T. Pimentel and nine other local government units (LGUs) of the province were awarded as Most Outstanding LGUs during the Gawad KALASAG National Awarding Ceremony at the Manila Hotel on December 11.

As spearheaded by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the Gawad KALASAG (KAlamidad at Sakuna LAbanan SAriling Galing ang Kaligtasan) rated the following LGUs as Beyond Compliant, namely:

o  Provincial Government of Surigao del Sur;

o  LGU - Tandag City;

o  LGU - Cagwait;

o  LGU - Carmen;

o  LGU - Carrascal;

o  LGU - Cortes;

o  LGU - Hinatuan;

o  LGU - Lanuza;

o  LGU - Marihatag; and

o  LGU - Tagbina.

The recognition of these LGUs and offices went above and beyond the call of duty and a demonstration of exceptional leadership, innovation, and resilience in the establishment and operations of the local DRRM councils and offices.

The LDRRMCO-awardees during the assessment established their capacity in initiating the disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation (CCA) programs in support to the disaster four thematic focuses on achieving disaster resilience namely, prevention and mitigation; preparedness; recovery and rehabilitation; and response, and also in consideration on climate change impact.

For this year, a total of 1,461 LDRRMCOs were endorsed to the national council, while only 1,009 were keenly considered, with 250 of them passed and were rated with Beyond Compliant. (NGPB/PIA-Surigao del Sur)
