By Nida Grace P. Barcena

BISLIG CITY, Surigao del Sur -- Two major landslides were reported along the Pagtilaan Road, national highway, Lingig town and Pagbakatan Road, national highway, Mangagoy, Bislig City to Lingig, all in Surigao del Sur, due to forecast shearline that brought intermittent moderate to heavy rainfall with gusty wind on January 16, 2024.

According to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) - 2nd District Engineering Office (DEO), the road along Pagtilaan in the municipality of Lingig was confirmed as one lane passable at around 9:45 AM. While for road along Sitio Pagbakatan, Mahayahay, in Lingig town, national highway in Mangagoy, Bislig City to Lingig was also reported one lane passable at 10:45 AM.

The said roads were declared passable to all types of vehicles after the swift clearing operations made by concerned government agencies.

Nevertheless, DPWH advised all commuters to be careful and vigilant while passing through the indicated road sections.

The provincial government of Surigao del Sur issued Memorandum Order No. 018-2024 directing all local chief executives/local Disaster Risk Reduction, and Management (DRRM) Council chairpersons to prepare and respond to any eventualities and declare at their discretion and sound judgment, the suspension/or cancellation of classes as they see fit considering the prevailing conditions of their respective localities to ensure the safety of the learners and teachers from unnecessary physical dangers brought about by the shearline.

“The local DRRM Council of Lingig chaired by Mayor Elmer Evangelio activated its Emergency Operations Center (EOC), and the suspension of classes at all levels,” disclosed Engr. Ian Russel D. Onsing, chief  DRRM office.

“There is no reported casualty and property damage in the locality, as of press time,” he added.

Meanwhile, other local government units such as Bislig City and San Miguel town declared the suspension of classes in all levels for  public and private schools, while for Tandag City classes were suspended from kindergarten to grade 12, both public and private schools. (NGPB/PIA-Surigao del Sur)
