Port of Agusan benchmarks on green ports strategies

SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte (PIA) – For its bid to be recognized under the Green Ports Award System (GPAS) of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Port Services Network, the Port Management Office (PMO) of Agusan looked up and took pointers from the Port Management Office of Surigao, a GPAS awardee in 2023.

The delegation for the benchmarking were members of the PMO Agusan - Environmental Management Committee.

Led by Port Manager Froilan U. Caturla, the Surigao team generously shared their expertise and strategies that secured GPAS recognition, a distinction also achieved by fellow Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) ports in Cagayan de Oro and Batangas.

Caturla said, “the collaborative effort underscored the Philippines' growing reputation as a leader in sustainable port management.”

With high hopes, the official wished the Agusan Port would follow suit and make it to the GPAS 2024 awards.

"With three GPAS awardees, the PPA demonstrated unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and a greener future for generations to come." Caturla added.

The GPAS program, developed by APEC Port Services Network (APSN), is a prestigious evaluation system for APEC region ports.

It functions as a roadmap for developing green port initiatives, fostering best practice sharing, enhancing port visibility and competitiveness, and ultimately, strengthening sustainable development capabilities. (PPA-PMO Surigao/PIA-Surigao del Norte)
