DSWD turns over Project LAWA at BINHI in Lingig town
LINGIG, Surigao del Sur (PIA) - The Department of Social Welfare and
Development (DSWD) Field Office Caraga turned over the Project LAWA at BINHI to
barangays in Mahayahay and Union, all in Lingig, Surigao del Sur on June 7.
The Local Adaptation to Water Access and Breaking Insufficiency through
Nutritious Harvest for the Impoverished or Project LAWA at BINHI seeks to
address water scarcity and food insecurity in response to the threats posed by
El NiΓ±o and La NiΓ±a.
Lingig Mayor Elmer Evangelio emphasized the importance of sustained community
involvement saying, "I hope we avoid the ‘ningas-kugon’ mentality which
means being enthusiastic at the start only. You are the most important part of
this project, and you will benefit the most from its harvest. Whether we are
paid or not, we will work because it sustains us. Don't waste this opportunity.
I am with you on this."
The successful 20-day implementation of the project was made possible through
the strong support of the provincial government headed by Gov. Alexander
T. Pimentel, including the leadership of the local government of Lingig, and
the concerned punong barangays.
The collaboration highlighted the importance of community and local government
partnerships in achieving sustainable development goals and enhancing
resilience against climate-related threats.
With Project LAWA at BINHI, the communities will be equipped with long-term
solutions to water access and food production challenges, ensuring that they
are prepared and resilient to face environmental adversities. (Photo courtesy
