DOST-Surigao Norte trains local entrepreneurs on machine operation
SURIGAO CITY, Surigao del Norte --The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Caraga, through its Provincial Science and Technology Office (PSTO) in Surigao del Norte, recently conducted a technology training dubbed as, "Mastering Machines: Essential Principles of Operation, Maintenance, and Safety Assurance," held at the Mechanical Technology Building of Surigao del Norte State University (SNSU) - Surigao City campus.
The said training empowered the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the province by equipping them with vital skills in machine operation, maintenance, and safety protocols. It also enhanced the capabilities of academic institutions and build strong industry partnerships to foster innovation in metalworking and to improve the competitive edge of the metals and engineering sector in Caraga region.
During the training, Dr. Renee C. Tan, program chairperson of mechanical technology, served as the resource speaker, providing a thorough discussion on safety protocols, effective risk management, and implementation of best practices to ensure a secure working environment.
The training then transitioned to the technical aspects of machine operation where Dr. Tan provided a comprehensive overview of lathe machines, including their attachments and accessories.
This session helped participants develop a solid understanding of the various components of lathe machines, laying the groundwork for the practical application that followed.
After the theoretical session, Dr. Tan, with the assistance of Reynato M. Subang, guided participants through the process of tool bit grinding and its application in lathe machines for mechanical tasks such as threading and resurfacing.
This hands-on experience allowed attendees to put their theoretical knowledge into practice, boosting their confidence and honing their operational skills.
Participants of the training were project beneficiaries of the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) of DOST-SDN from the metals and engineering industries, other MSME representatives, and students from various academic institutions across Surigao del Norte.
This initiative was made possible through the strengthened partnership between the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and SNSU, which played an important role in the successful establishment of the Metals and Engineering Innovation Center (MEIC) in Caraga.
Meanwhile, Engr. Jovan O. Agbu, project technical assistant II of the DOST - Metals and Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC) expressed his appreciation to the participants and highlighted the ongoing collaboration and future training opportunities.
The training reflected DOST’s dedication to promoting a culture of continuous improvement, safety, and sustainability among local enterprises, ensuring MSMEs are well-prepared to excel in a competitive market. (DOST-Surigao del Norte/PIA-Surigao del Norte)
