P776K streetlight project completed in Tagbina's Barangay Sta. Maria
TAGBINA, Surigao del Sur, (PIA) -- The community of Barangay Sta. Maria in Tagbina, Surigao del Sur celebrated a significant milestone as Mayor Glaiza Jane Polizon-Lanete led the inauguration of a P776,177 streetlight installation project on November 5.
Aimed at boosting public safety and infrastructure, the project funded through the Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan-Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (KALAHI CIDSS) - National Community-Driven Development Program Additional Financing (KC-NCDDP AF) Phase 2 Sub-Project, installed 22 electric-powered street lights across key areas in Sta. Maria, enhancing night visibility and ensuring a safer environment for residents and visitors alike.
Special Programs Division Chief Glenn B. Lazaro shared that the project implementation is a collaborative effort between the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Tagbina, serving as the administration’s commitment to sustainable and community-centered progress.
At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Mayor Lanete underscored the project’s focus on uplifting the welfare of the barangay by addressing the community’s ongoing need for safer and well-lit streets.
“This is more than just lighting up the streets; it’s about fostering an
environment where people feel safe and secure, even at night,” the mayor said.
Projects like these are essential as they respond directly to the needs of our communities and support overall public welfare,” she added.
The inauguration was attended by key figures from the DSWD Caraga Regional Project Management Office (SRPMO), who expressed their support for Tagbina’s commitment to community-driven initiatives. Joining Mayor Lanete were members of the Sangguniang Bayan, including Janito Lumakin, Vanessa Polizon, Johnflor Ramas, Chadelle Oraiz, Marichel Estavillo, Jay Ar Monecillo, Marlyn Lumakin, and Nathalie Nodado.
The ceremony also brought together members of the barangay council, KALAHI-CIDSS area/municipal coordinating team (A/MCT), Barangay Development Council Technical Working Group (BDC-TWG), and local volunteers who contributed to the project’s planning and implementation.
Project impact and future plans
The streetlight installation represented a step forward in the broader vision for Tagbina’s barangays, aiming to foster self-sustaining development while enhancing basic infrastructure. Beyond improved night safety, the new lighting system is expected to support evening activities in the barangay, encourage local economic engagement, and instill a sense of pride and ownership among residents.
Mayor Lanete concluded her remarks by reaffirming the LGU’s dedication to pursuing more community-centric initiatives that address fundamental needs. “This streetlight project is just the beginning. We will continue to work closely with national agencies and our community members to develop projects that ensure safer, healthier, and more resilient barangays,” she said in a local vernacular.
