Butuan City launches road safety program to the barangays
BUTUAN CITY — Some 250 representatives from the 86 barangays of the city government of Butuan participated in the Launching of the Butuan City Road Safety Program conducted on December 4.
Initiated by the City Transportation and Traffic Management Department (CTTMD) the program emphasized the city’s commitment to creating a safe road environment for all. It also highlighted the transformative effect of a unified effort of the city government and the local barangays.
“Ang road safety usa ka shared responsibility. Kini nanginahanglan sa active na participation of not just the government, but also every individual, organization, and barangay. This program embodies our commitment to empower our barangays to take ownership and play an active role in promoting road safety within their respective jurisdictions,” said Maria Kristina Cassion, department head of the City Transportation and Traffic Management Department (CTTMD).
During the launching, Engr. Karl Jun Arellano, acting division chief of the Planning and Data Management Division of the Traffic Management Division (TMD) disclosed that young adults aged 25-34 are the most frequent victims of road crashes and 52.9 percent of the accidents involved motorcycles particularly during the peak commuting hours.
Through this activity the department equipped the respective participants with adequate knowledge and tools to promote responsible road use and road safety to decrease and prevent road accidents creating a safe road environment for all road users.
The barangay road safety plan of the program includes road safety awareness campaign, installation and maintenance of road safety signages, enforcement of traffic rules, deputization of community members, and monitoring and reporting of road crashes.
Vincent Rizal C. Rosario, punong barangay of Libertad served as an inspiration as he showcased their barangay’s best practices and innovative initiatives in implementing the Transportation and Traffic Management Code.
Barangay Libertad became a model for efficient and effective traffic enforcement with the help of their Barangay Command Center, a game-changing facility equipped with advanced technology such as CCTV monitoring system, real-time surveillance, and strategic planning.
With the launching of the program, all barangays were empowered and encouraged to participate in the Road Safety Program and contribute in reducing road related accidents in the city. (MFC/PIA-Caraga with a story from CTTMD)
