Agusan sur empowers prime movers in agriculture with new skills training
BAYUGAN CITY, Agusan del Sur – The Provincial Agriculture and Veterinary Office (PAVO) hosted a four-day capacity development program for the agriculture extension workers (AEWs) and barangay agriculture workers (BAWs) from November 5-8, at the Agriculture Resource Center in Barangay Mabuhay of this city.
The training elevated the knowledge and skills of the participants whose role is crucial to the agriculture sector in the province in terms of information delivery, technology, and extension services that will help farmers improve their agricultural practices. The program was designed to improve the yields of farmers who are beneficiaries of the provincial government's Poverty Alleviation Program.
"We are looking at ensuring sustainable soil management and identifying the most efficient fertilization programs for our priority commodities like rubber, cacao, banana, rice, corn, and all others,” said Provincial Agriculturist Armando Valiente in an interview with PTV-8 Agusan del Sur.
Resource persons who are experts in the field of agriculture like Dr. Johnvie Goloran, Dr. Adeflor Garcia, Dr. Purificacion Cahatian, and Leandreux Occasion also shared their insights on various topics related to Soil Management and Pests and Diseases Management of the major crops in Agusan del Sur. Valiente also emphasized the importance of soil testing and analysis.
"Technically, the most important thing is to proceed with soil testing and analysis for each farm. That's why we are establishing a state-of-the-art soils laboratory and hopefully, by the second quarter of 2025, it will be operational," Valiente added.
Valiente further bared that the training program is part of PAVO's efforts to empower agricultural workers and foster the growth of the agriculture sector in Agusan del Sur, by equipping AEWs and BAWs with the necessary knowledge and skills.
