Surigao Sur records single firework-related injury during New Year celeb

By Nida Grace P. Barcena

TANDAG CITY, Surigao del Sur (PIA) -- The province of Surigao del Sur, led by Governor Alexander T. Pimentel, recorded a single firework-related injury during the New Year celebrations, contributing to the Caraga region's total of 12 cases—seven on January 1 and five on January 2—according to the Department of Health – Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) Caraga's update on January 2.

Provincial Health Office Chief Oscar De Jesus confirmed that the victim, a 12-year-old from the municipality of Tago, sustained a right-hand injury caused by a "Boga," an improvised noisemaker commonly used during festivities.

While the province recorded only one case, the overall injury count in Caraga was notably low compared to other areas, such as Agusan del Norte, which reported four (4) new injuries, and Surigao del Norte, and Agusan del Sur both recorded with three cases, Butuan City one and the Province of Dinagat Islands had no reported incidents.

While the province recorded only one case, the overall injury count in Caraga was notably low compared to other areas.

Gov. Pimentel credited Surigao del Sur's success in limiting injuries to the collaborative efforts in promoting DOH’s "Iwas Paputok" and "Healthy Handaan" campaigns. These initiatives raised awareness about the dangers of fireworks and emphasized safer, fireworks-free celebrations. The provincial government also encouraged residents to partake in community events that focused on safety and unity, helping to foster a culture of responsibility.

Despite the lone injury in Surigao del Sur, the low regional numbers reflect the impact of these campaigns. Governor Pimentel expressed his appreciation for the disciplined approach of the local leaders and citizens, stating, “This accomplishment is the result of our collective commitment to safeguarding our communities.”

Looking ahead, local officials in Surigao del Sur reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining fireworks safety and continuing the promotion of safer alternatives to traditional festivities. The incident involving the young victim from Tago served as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and community cooperation to ensure that future New Year celebrations will remain joyful and injury-free. (NGPB, PIA-Surigao del Sur)
