DA kicks-off 2025 with distribution of rice seeds, vouchers to farmers in Surigao Sur
TANDAG CITY, Surigao del Sur (PIA) -- As 2024 concluded, the Department of Agriculture (DA) successfully distributed rice seeds and seed discount vouchers (SDVs) to qualified farmers in Surigao del Sur, marking DA's ongoing commitment to supporting agricultural development and empowering local farmers in 2025 and beyond.
San Miguel distribution
The first distribution event took
place on December 2 in the Municipality of San Miguel to 388 rice farmers who
received SDVs as part of the initiative to promote the use of hybrid seed
varieties. By encouraging farmers to adopt hybrid seeds, the program aims to
boost productivity and increase farm income.
Tago, Cortes, and Tandag City distribution
The second phase of the distribution occurred on December 10-11, benefiting farmers in three additional locations:
· Tago: 178 rice farmers
· Cortes: 48 rice farmers
· Tandag City: 80 rice farmers
This brought the total number of farmer-beneficiaries to 306 across these areas.
Impactful and collaborative efforts
The initiative was designed to ensure
sustainable agricultural activities in Surigao del Sur being the rice
granary province in the region. By providing access to hybrid seeds and
subsidized inputs, the program seeks to:
1. Increase rice production in
the province,
2. Reduce farmers' operating
costs, and
3. Support food security efforts
in the region.
The successful implementation of this initiative was made possible through the joint efforts of the DA-Caraga Rice Program, the municipal and city agriculture offices, staff of DA-APCO Surigao del Sur, and local farmers. Their collaboration underscored the importance of teamwork in achieving agricultural sustainability and development.
