DOST establishes food innovation centers to bolster Caraga growth

BUTUAN CITY – Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Caraga Director Noel M. Ajoc shared the establishment of five food innovations centers (FIC) in Caraga region, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to regional development through science, technology, and innovation (STI), during the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas March 25.
The FICs are Caraga State University in Butuan City, Surigao del Norte State University (SNSU) in Surigao City, Agusan del Sur State College of Agriculture and Technology (ASSCAT) in Agusan del Sur, North Eastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU) in Surigao del Sur and the newest to join is the Father Saturnino Urios University also in Butuan City.
These centers are focused on developing innovative food products, including functional foods, to enhance food security and support local businesses, along with the agency’s efforts to facilitate the adoption of advanced processing technologies and improve production efficiency, ensure compliance with international quality standards, and open opportunities for export markets.
“A notable product of the food innovation center is the Danggit ice cream of NEMSU in Liangga campus, Surigao del Sur that is now being tapped by national and international investors for commercialization,” Dir. Ajoc said.
“In Caraga, we recognize that science and technology innovations are essential for the fast-paced growth of our region and the entire nation,” Dir. Ajoc added as he highlighted DOST Caraga’s significant contributions to economic progress, sustainability, and technological advancements in the region, reinforcing its role in national development and aligning with the goals of the Caraga Regional Development Plan (RDP) 2023-2028.
DOST Caraga plays a crucial role in realizing the innovation and industrialization on Fishery, Agro-Agriculture, Mining, and Eco-Tourism (i2FAME) strategy by introducing new technologies and research-based solutions to these key industries, the agency has helped local enterprises enhance productivity, improve product quality, and increase market competitiveness.
Additionally, DOST Caraga collaborated well with the Regional Development Council (RDC) and other stakeholders to facilitate industry growth, foster entrepreneurship, and provide funding support for promising innovations. This synergy between government and industry players paved the way for a more vibrant and resilient Caraga economy.
With unwavering support from stakeholders, DOST Caraga envisions a technology-driven and progressive region where innovation fosters economic opportunities, environmental sustainability, and improved quality of life for all Caraganons.
The Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas is a nationwide simultaneous event every Tuesday at 9:00 a.m., spearheaded by the Presidential Communications Office in partnership with PIA.
