BFAR-13 calls for stronger marine wildlife protection following killing of pregnant blue shark
BUTUAN CITY -- The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) Caraga strongly condemned the recent killing of a pregnant blue shark (Prionace glauca) in Brgy. Cabayawa, Tubay, Agusan del Norte on March 18. The agency is urging the public to take an active role in conserving marine wildlife and protecting ocean biodiversity.
An initial investigation revealed that the blue shark, measuring 2.76 meters in length and 0.53 meters in width, was mistakenly identified as a large tuna or marlin. Misunderstanding and fear among beachgoers led to its capture and subsequent death. The shark, which had already begun giving birth, released 30 pups, with 29 successfully returned to the sea.
BFAR Caraga reminded the public that under the Philippine Fisheries Code (RA 8550 as amended by RA 10654), the capture, harm, or trade of protected marine species, including sharks, manta rays, dolphins, whales, dugongs, and sea turtles, is illegal. Offenders face severe penalties, including an administrative fine of up to P5 million and imprisonment of up to 20 years if convicted.
To prevent similar incidents, DA-BFAR Caraga called on local government units, fisherfolk, and coastal communities to strengthen efforts in marine conservation through education, vigilance, and law enforcement.
According to DA-BFAR, the bureau remains committed to its advocacy for sustainable fisheries and marine biodiversity protection. Also, the public is encouraged to report any cases of illegal fishing or wildlife killings to the proper authorities. By working together, this will ensure that marine ecosystems remain healthy and sustainable for future generations. (NCLM, PIA Agusan del Norte)
