LGU Dinagat receives ‘Timbangan ng Bayan’ to ensure fair market transactions
DINAGAT ISLANDS – The local government unit (LGU) of Dinagat received a unit of "Timbangan ng Bayan" unit, comprising a protective cage and a 10-kilogram capacity weighing scale, marking a significant step towards ensuring fair trade practices within the municipality's public market.
This initiative, a collaborative effort led by Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC) in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), aims to distribute caged weighing scales to selected public markets nationwide.
The Timbangan ng Bayan directly addresses the provisions of Republic Act No. 11706 or the Timbangan ng Bayan Law, which mandates the establishment of accessible and accurate weighing centers in public markets across the Philippines. By providing these readily available scales, the project empowers consumers to verify the weight of their purchases, ensuring they receive exactly what they pay for.
Provincial Director Elmer Natad of the DTI highlighted the importance of this collaboration, stating, "This initiative underscores the DTI's unwavering commitment to consumer welfare and the promotion of a fair and transparent marketplace. By providing accessible weighing scales, we are empowering consumers and fostering trust in our public markets."
Municipal Mayor Simplicio S. Leyran Jr., along with the market administrator RobelynParreΓ±as, pledged their commitment to the project's sustainability. They emphasized the importance of maintaining the Timbangan ng Bayan and ensuring its proper use for the benefit of all consumers.
The project's theme, “Tamang Timbangan, Para Hindi Kulang” reinforces the critical role of accurate weights in fostering fair and equitable transactions. The LGU Dinagat expressed its gratitude to RCBC and partner agencies for their support in enhancing consumer protection and promoting fair trade practices within the community.
